The Government has unanimously passed a resolution supporting the bipartisan “Secure America and Orderly Immigration Act” proposed in the U.S. Senate and in the House of Representatives. Immigration Debate Getting Louder
Sun, 29 Jan 2006 23:50:44 GMT
Immigration has become an increasingly contentious political and social issue around the country. Organizations patterned after the controversial "Minuteman Project" along the U.S.-Mexico border have sprung up in New England, the Midwest, the South, and the Pacific Northwest. This has led to demonstrations and shouting matches with those opposed to what they call "vigilantes."
How US Immigration Evolved as the Nation Grew and Changed
Mon, 23 Jan 2006 02:19:00 GMT
In the beginning, America - vast, raw and sparsely populated - needed every immigrant it could get. When King George III tried to stem an exodus of his subjects to the New World in the 18th century, the colonists furiously accused him of trying to "prevent the population of these states." At the 1787 Constitutional Convention, James Madison declared, "That part of America that has encouraged [immigrants] has advanced most rapidly in population, agriculture and the arts." Well into the 19th century, American employers paid the passage of Europeans who were willing to come to America to work.

Diplomats from Mexico and Central America on Monday demanded guest worker programs and the legalization of undocumented migrants in the United States, while criticizing a U.S. proposal for tougher border enforcement. Meeting in Mexico's capital, the regional officials pledged to do more to fight migrant trafficking, but indirectly condemned a U.S. bill that would make illegal entry a felony and extend border walls.
US business group will fight against immigration curbs
Sun, 08 Jan 2006 14:09:33 GMT
The US Chamber of Commerce, America’s most powerful business lobby, has said that fighting punitive legislation restricting immigration would rank among its top priorities for this year. Setting out the chamber’s agenda for 2006, the lobbying group launched a scathing attack on a bill promoted by conservative Republicans in the US House of Representatives, saying it would add greatly to the burden on businesses.
Illegal immigration death trap
Tue, 03 Jan 2006 14:15:24 GMT
If anti-immigrant forces in Congress have their way, illegal immigration would be a crime punishable by death. When the Senate returns from its holiday break, one of the first items on the agenda is dealing with immigration enforcement legislation (HR 4437) that was passed by the House just before Christmas. Sponsored by Rep. James Sensenbrenner, R-Wis., the law would increase enforcement against employers who hire undocumented workers and promote immigration-enforcement cooperation between federal and local officials.
