The new "Britishness test" for foreigners who apply to become UK citizens has been launched.Immigration Minister Tony McNulty is unveiling sample questions from the test, which has now become compulsory.The curriculum was set out following recommendations by a Home Office panel chaired by Professor Sir Bernard Crick. It includes British history and customs as well as practical information on living in Britain. Foreigners who wish to become British citizens will have to sit the test at one of 90 exam centres across the country.
UK immigration: grandparent clause in doubt

Changes to UK immigration rules could end the traditional entry and settlement rights of Australians with British grandparents, The Times newspaper reported today. The newspaper said Britain's new points-based immigration system could end the scheme that allows Commonwealth citizens with a British grandparent to enter and settle in the country. People from Australia, South Africa, New Zealand, Canada and Zimbabwe are the most likely to be affected.

British immigration soars to record heights

Immigration to Britain surged to a record high last year, boosted by the arrival of more than 50,000 people from new European Union countries, official figures released on Thursday showed. A total of 494,100 foreign nationals migrated to Britain, an increase of 21 percent on the 2003 figure of 406,800, the Office for National Statistics said. Some 52,600 of those were from the 10 countries that joined the European bloc on May 1 last year and arrived after the accession date.
Britain to crack down on student visa abusers

To crack down on student visa abusers, British government has asked universities to inform it when overseas students fail to take up a place after they have been granted a visa to study in the country. The three-month pilot, which began on September 1, will test administrative systems by which universities can report overseas students who fail to show up or disappear soon after enrolling.

Sweden should be more open to foreign labour and should offer tax breaks to encourage skilled immigration, according to the government's Invest in Sweden Agency. The agency's general director, Kai Hammerich, has criticised Sweden's existing tax rules, which only allow experts in certain areas to enjoy a reduced rate for up to three years, saying that they are 'arbitrary'.

More than 1.1 million people moved to Britain in the decade to 2001, research revealed by the BBC suggests. Figures show just over half of Britain's population growth in recent years can be attributed to immigration. The most extensive assessment of migration ever produced shows 7.53% of people living in Britain were born overseas - up from 5.75% in 1991.
Immigration increases UK population by over 1 million

Immigration has boosted the UK's population by over one million since 1997, a new report says. According to think-tank Migrationwatch UK, net migration had added more than 1.2 million to the UK population in the past seven years, accounting for 81% of the total population growth during that period. The group says that that amounts to the population of Birmingham and Nottingham added together and is equivalent to an average growth in population due to immigration of 177,000 each year.
IND have introduced New Application Forms

30 August 2005: Immigration and Nationality Directorate (IND) have introduced New Application Forms. These forms are now available on the Applications Forms page. Anyone applying for an extension of stay or indefinite leave to remain, or requesting the transfer of leave fixed to a passport or travel document, is required to complete an application form and pay the prescribed fee.
