UK immigration: grandparent clause in doubt

Changes to UK immigration rules could end the traditional entry and settlement rights of Australians with British grandparents, The Times newspaper reported today. The newspaper said Britain's new points-based immigration system could end the scheme that allows Commonwealth citizens with a British grandparent to enter and settle in the country. People from Australia, South Africa, New Zealand, Canada and Zimbabwe are the most likely to be affected.

Immigration to Britain surged to a record high last year, boosted by the arrival of more than 50,000 people from new European Union countries, official figures released on Thursday showed. A total of 494,100 foreign nationals migrated to Britain, an increase of 21 percent on the 2003 figure of 406,800, the Office for National Statistics said. Some 52,600 of those were from the 10 countries that joined the European bloc on May 1 last year and arrived after the accession date.

To crack down on student visa abusers, British government has asked universities to inform it when overseas students fail to take up a place after they have been granted a visa to study in the country. The three-month pilot, which began on September 1, will test administrative systems by which universities can report overseas students who fail to show up or disappear soon after enrolling.
