Are you sworn in at that time or do you have to go back to some other
appt. for more bureacratic hoops to jump through?
Do you get some kind of paper that says you are a citizen?
Do they make you surrender your passport from your home country?
Can you apply for a U.S. passport right then and there? Or can you
still travel on your home country passport and green card?

You are a US Citizen right after the swearing in, as soon as you've
finished reciting the pledge of allegiance. Straight after that,
they'll hand out a certificate of naturalization which is proof that
you are a US Citizen. With this certificate you can register to vote,
apply for a US passport, etc. basically do anything that any other US
Citizen can do, there are no more hoops to jump through afterwards
(except filling out passport forms, voter registration forms,
obviously).
The only things that ask to be handed in is your greencard and any
other immigration documents you might have, such as re-entry permits.
They don't ask you to hand in your 'foreign' passport, as the US
Govt. has no authority to request it, it remains the property of the
foreign government. Depending on the laws of the 'foreign' country
(Im assuming UK in your case) you retain UK citizenship unless you go
to a UK consulate/ embassy and renounce it in accordance with
applicable UK laws.

right there! I'm SOOOOOO tired of jumping throug all these hoops...
especially when the worst ones are created by THEM making mistakes and
ME having to fix them!

Along with excellent advice from other posters, would also suggest you
go to the social security office with your shiny new certificate and get
them to amend your status in their system.
