Amnesty to illegal immigrants in UK?

Greetings.

I'm almost certain I read a while back that the UK government had some rule
that if you were an illegal immigrant but could prove that you had been
resident in Britain for a very long period of time (6 or 12 years, maybe?)
you would be granted permanent residence. Am I misremembering or was
there such a law? If so, is it still in effect? And where can I get more
information on it?

Regards,
Tristan

It is a concession, rather than a law - 10 years continuous lawful
residence, or 14 years if some/all was not lawful.

IND staff instructions on dealing with applications are at -

I believe exempt status (e.g., diplomats) also counts towards the 14
years, and the length of stay is pro-rated if you have periods of stay
both with and without leave.

Thanks; this is exactly what I was looking for.

Do note that the Immigration Rules now incorporate the Long Residence
concessions and accordingly are now part of UK law.

Para 276A to 276D in the following extract of the Immigration Rules is
in play :-
