Australia Needs Skills Expo Melbourne

Published on: Thu, 13 Oct 2005 09:51:25 GMT

Australian employers will have the opportunity to attract overseas workers at the Australia Needs Skills Expo in Melbourne tomorrow, Minister for Immigration and Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs, Amanda Vanstone, said. ‘Local employers will learn about the initiatives the Australian Government has introduced to attract skilled migrants to Australia to help address skill shortages,’ Senator Vanstone said.

‘The Government is working closely with industry to target the skilled migration program to help best meet the needs of the states and regions, including regional and rural Victoria.

‘Employers unable to fill skilled positions can sponsor overseas workers through programs such as the Employer Nomination Scheme, the Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme, and the Temporary Business Visa Program.

‘Skilled migration has clear economic and social benefits for Australia and the Australian Government has a range of initiatives to attract skilled migrants, especially to regional areas.

'I am particularly pleased to see Victoria’s regions so well-represented at this Expo.

‘I strongly encourage would be skilled migrants in Australia who have skills in demand, including tradespeople, engineers and cooks, to visit the Expo, talk to employers and representatives from the regions and attend information sessions about skilled migration.

‘I also encourage employers to come along and learn about the initiatives the Australian Government has introduced to attract skilled migrants to Australia to help address skill shortages,’ Senator Vanstone said.

The Expo is presented by the Department of Immigration and Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs in partnership with the Victorian Government’s Skilled Migration Program. Experienced staff from both agencies will be available to answer any questions about the process of skilled migration.
