Shared agreement on measures to improve visa security were a hallmark of discussions in Rome on 17 October 2005 between Senator Vanstone and Mr Franco Frattini, the Vice-President and Commissioner for Justice, Freedom and Security, of the European Commission. Mr Frattini updated Senator Vanstone on EU plans to establish comprehensive databases of lost and stolen passports, as a means of significantly strengthening border security measures.

Australian employers will have the opportunity to attract overseas workers at the Australia Needs Skills Expo in Melbourne tomorrow, Minister for Immigration and Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs, Amanda Vanstone, said. ‘Local employers will learn about the initiatives the Australian Government has introduced to attract skilled migrants to Australia to help address skill shortages,’ Senator Vanstone said.

Australia's skilled migrant recruitment campaign has begun in the United Kingdon. The international skills expo is being held at Australia House on the Strand in London. The event is the result of the Department of Immigration's decision to admit an extra 20,000 skilled migrants this year, taking the 2005/2006 intake to almost 100,000.
